Mohair Farm and ShopCrookabeck is a 40 acre (16 ha) farm beneath Place Fell. It is marked on the 1:25000 Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure Map No. 5, The English Lakes NE area, at grid reference 402156. To the South is the Kirkstone Pass (1,500 feet ) to Windermere and to the North is Ullswater which is 8 miles long. We overlook the impressive Hellvellyn mountain range (3118 feet) and Striding Edge. Crookabeck was built in the 1700's and is named after the double bend in the nearby Goldrill Beck which is shaped like a shepherd's crook. All the rainfall, over 90" per year, ends up in the Goldrill Beck which feeds into Ullswater.
A wide variety of wild life and bird life lives here including red squirrels, badgers, foxes, roe deer, herons and buzzards. The golden eagles nest in a nearby valley. A herd of red deer live on the fellside. Unfortunately the grey squirrel has recently arrived, so the future of the smaller native red is under threat.
The farm is also of course home to our herds of Angora Goats and Herdwick Sheep.
