Cumbria is the home of the attractive and hardy Herdwick sheep.
The Herdwicks are great characters with white faces and legs.
Homebred Herdwick Shearling Ram
The most widely known breeder was Beatrix Potter, the children's story writer, who left several local farms and their flocks of Herdwicks to the National Trust when she died.
The lambs are jet black when born with white tips to their ears. At maturity they take on the subtle varying shades of grey much prized in grey tweeds, knitwear and hand knitting wools, which are hard wearing, non-fading and completely natural. A limited number of herdwick sheep of both sexes are available for sale each year. They are slow growing and produce a top quality meat with a superior flavour.
