 Crookabeck Farm and Shop

Crookabeck is a 40 acre (16 ha) farm beneath Place Fell. It is marked on the 1:25000 Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure Map No. 5, The English Lakes NE area, at grid reference 402156. MAP

To the South is the Kirkstone Pass (1,500 feet ) to Windermere and to the North is Ullswater which is 8 miles long. We overlook the impressive Hellvellyn mountain range (3118 feet) and Striding Edge.

Crookabeck was built in the 1700's and is named after the double bend in the nearby Goldrill Beck which is shaped like a shepherd's crook. All the rainfall, over 90" per year, ends up in the Goldrill Beck which feeds into Ullswater.

The farm with its natural rock garden

The natural rock garden with its unusual carved gates, is full of peat loving plants - cyclamen, rhododendrons, frillaries, hellebores, erythroniums, trilliums, mecanopsis and hostas, which all thrive on the goat manure.

A wide variety of wild life and bird life lives here including red squirrels, badgers, foxes, roe deer, herons and buzzards. The golden eagles nest in a nearby valley. A herd of red deer live on the fellside. Unfortunately the grey squirrel has recently arrived, so the future of the smaller native red is under threat.

Domestic animals and fowl also live here, Bother the black labrador and Luke the cat. Rare breed farmyard poultry - Marans, Light Sussex and Wellsummer hens and Khaki Campbell ducks, also roam free-range.

The farm is also of course home to our herds of Herdwick Sheep and Angora Goats

Working near to Crookabeck is a hand-loom weaver who weaves beautiful bright silky mohair rugs on a loom which is over 100 years old. This has always been in the family and originates in The Shetland Isles. Each rug is unique. They are available for sale in the farm shop.
